I believe that marketing and advertising are the twin diseases of modern society.
It is the con game taken to the level of science, ruthlessly assaulting the minds of not just men and women, but their children as well. I shudder to think of my happen if we do not work to impose more controls on their hidious 'art'.
As a marketing professional there are times when I have a difficult time defending some practices.
Mail-in rebates, the disregard for accuracy of language, and the necessity to create demand and undermine an individual's self-esteem are tragedies of
"ruthless" marketing.
These are some of the same results of democracy, yet when asked to define a better way, I'm at a loss.
So to those who are callous toward marketing, seek to weed out and question those practices which are detrimental to society and individuals. This profession is one part science, one part art, and one part what parts of our society demand. A broad brush of criticism will spill over on the critics.
